Though Delta County’s homeless shelter closes for the season at the end of April, work continues in an effort to provide emergency overnight winter shelter and a hot meal to the homeless and houseless in our community. The third annual Have a Heart for the Homeless! walkathon will raise funds to continue the mission in November, when the shelter opens for its fourth season of service.

The walkathon will take place Saturday, May 11, at Confluence Lake. Walkers may participate individually or on a team, and will collect pledges per loop. Businesses and civic organizations are encouraged to form teams. All funds collected will directly help the hungry and homeless in Delta County.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three individuals and teams that collect the most pledges.

“We invite everyone out to Confluence to enjoy the beautiful spring weather and at the same time help us raise community awareness and critically needed funds to help those in need of emergency shelter,” said Kami Collins, an Abraham Connection board member and the walkathon organizer.

Registration begins at 9 a.m at the pavilion near the bridge, with the walk commencing at 9:30 a.m. Call the shelter hotline at 773-8290 or find the shelter on Facebook for more information or to get a registration and pledge form.

The Abraham Connection is a seasonal shelter offering a warm place to sleep for Delta County families, women and men, operating November-April. In the third season of shelter, several hundred volunteers provided over 750 bed nights and 500 meals, and put in 7,000+ volunteer hours to make sure those in need had a warm meal and a safe, warm bed for one night.
